Prayer of Thérèse of Lisieux to the Holy Face of Jesus

O Jesus,
in Your cruel Passion,
You became “a man of sorrows,”
despised by human beings.
I adore Your divine Face.

Once it shone with the beauty and sweetness of divinity;
yet for my sake, that Face became like that of a leper.
Even so, in that disfigured Face,
I recognize Your infinite love.

I am consumed with the desire
that all humanity should love You.
The tears that flowed so abundantly from Your eyes
are like precious pearls to me;
I long to gather them,
so that by their value
I may help redeem the souls of poor sinners.

O Jesus,
I may not be able here on earth
to behold the sweetness of Your gaze—
that Face which alone captivates my heart;
nor can I experience here
the inexpressible tenderness of Your kiss.

Yet I submit myself to Your will.
I beg You to imprint Your divine likeness upon me
and to set me aflame with Your love,
so that it may quickly consume me
and bring me soon
to the vision of Your glorious Face in heaven.
